COM-MUN-I-CATION was a foundational piece in my artistic development for several reasons.
First, this was the first bigger canvas I did, in which I explored a much more expansive space and got me thinking about what larger pieces could convey and the information transferred in that kind of scale.
Second, the word itself became a siren call for what art was to me and what it could do. Most fundamentally art was and is communication and that realization was like a lightning strike in my brain for what I could and wanted to communicate.
Lastly, but not insignificantly, the form of the phrasing was quite important. The way the letters are distributed is the way my Mom used the word to yell at my Dad who was legendarily laconic. COM-MUN-I-CATION was the central word for my parent's relationship and how my Mom valued communication in the relationship.
This canvas is 48 inches by 60 inches and made with archival-quality natural cotton. The heavy-duty canvas is gesso primed and the frame is professionally constructed, with medium-weight cotton duck stretched around 1 1/2" profile kiln-dried stretcher bars and held in place with a flexible spline.
